Richard Barfield advises on prudential risk and regulation. He was previously senior director in PWC’s Risk and Regulatory practice gaining broad-ranging experience in advising financial service organisations at senior levels and leading engagements to address complex and sensitive issues. 

Richard focuses on prudential risk management for start-ups and recently authorised firms, often solo FCA-regulated. 

Richard’s work covers risk management frameworks, governance, capital and liquidity management, risk appetite, linking risk and remuneration, stress testing, ring-fencing, etc. Richard also conducts mock regulatory interviews for prospective INEDs on risk and audit. 

While at PwC he was seconded as FD to a major credit card company and bank.

Richard has edited two Practitioner’s Guides for Thomson Reuters on Banking Regulation: Mastering the New Regulatory Landscape (2016) and Basel III and Beyond (Thomson Reuters 2011, reprinted in 2012).

As an independent consultant Richard undertakes a variety of pro bono work on Brexit.

Representative experience

Risk, regulatory and commercial experience: deep familiarity with regulators’ expectations.

Recent clients have included FTSE 100 and equivalents with high standards and rigour.

Works directly with board committee members, ExCo and direct reports.

Executive experience as seconded FD of a Global Retail Bank.
