You’re on your way to becoming a lawyer. As a summer associate at Hogan Lovells, you’ll take critical steps toward advancing your career. With our support, you’ll develop your legal skills and learn from the field’s preeminent minds.

Our summer associate program is multifaceted. You’ll work with our lawyers, getting to know them and their practices and tapping into their collective experience. You’ll get the chance to do meaningful work across different practice areas. Your opportunities to work on pro bono projects will be impactful and you will have the choice to participate in responsible business activities. In 2023, our summer associates worked on 73 pro bono projects across the country, with nearly 70% of the class participating.

Our goal is to invest in experiential teaching and learning opportunities to help you get ready to master aspects of the practice. There will be many opportunities to interact with our lawyers and clients on substantive matters, including the possibility of attending client meetings, closings, administrative hearings, oral arguments, and depositions. Throughout these opportunities you’ll receive mentoring and feedback to encourage your ongoing development throughout the summer program and beyond.

And of course, you’ll get to know your fellow summer associates, spending the summer in a new city or experiencing a place you already love from a new perspective.

Our summer associate program typically runs from mid-May to late July. During the program, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in our Summer Associate Conference, a multi-day training and networking experience hosted by our Washington, D.C., office. The conference brings together summer associates from across the U.S. to connect with and learn from our incredible attorneys and professionals, build directly applicable skills, and develop meaningful relationships across the firm.

Our summer experience according to our summer associates

  • Everyone I have worked with has been very supportive and provided clear instructions and guidance throughout every assignment!
  • The Philadelphia Office’s summer program provided me with the opportunity to make meaningful connections, gain valuable insight on the work done by all levels of attorneys, and experience the culture and community that makes the Philadelphia Office so special. I am extremely grateful for my participation in the summer program, including the important role it played in my decision to start at Hogan Lovells as a full-time attorney.
  • “Because of the TV show, Suits, I had unrealistic expectations going into the Hogan Lovells’ summer associate program at its Philadelphia office; however, the summer associate experience proved to be a very enriching educational and personal experience. Members of the corporate practice group in Philly are personally invested in their summer and junior associates. I often found myself shocked when super busy senior associates and partners assigned substantive assignments that went out to clients—and not just imaginary work to keep us busy—intentionally carving out time to provide clear instructions, discussing the importance of assignments and expectations around work product, and entertaining questions.”
  • “The DEI efforts and fantastic firm culture [stand out]. Everyone I’ve worked with are nice and supportive.”

Washington, D.C.

Working in Washington, D.C.

Working at the intersection of business and government, we help clients navigate an increasingly complex legal and regulatory landscape. We’re at the forefront of events shaping the nation—and the world at large. We are the largest office in the US. With more than 500 lawyers and 600 Business Team professionals, members of our team have held key positions in all levels of government and industry.

The office is located between the White House and the U.S. Capitol, directly over the Metro Center stop on the Red, Orange, Silver, and Blue Lines. Our office space offers state-of-the-art technology, areas for collaborating, height-adjustable desks, and other wellness features. There is a fitness center on the lobby floor of our building, and membership is free for our employees. In addition, our building has an on-site emergency childcare center for children ages two months to 12 years, which is available to all employees.

We like to stay connected. We get together regularly for office-wide celebrations, Responsible Business activities, and informal get-togethers in the Hives (our communal spaces on each floor) and in our subsidized, full-service cafe, 1904.

What we do

Under the umbrella of our main practice groups—Corporate & Finance; Disputes; Global Regulatory; and Intellectual Property, Media, and Technology—our lawyers practice in more than 50 substantive areas. Virtually every practice group has a significant presence in our Washington, D.C., office.
