Hogan Lovells and Bite the Ballot Mark National Voter Registration Day at EGA

5 February 2014 - Hogan Lovells has today co-hosted an event with social enterprise Bite the Ballot at the Elizabeth Garret Anderson (EGA) school in Islington to mark National Voter Registration Day.

Ten Hogan Lovells trainees worked with a team from Bite the Ballot to deliver a programme of educational materials and interactive activities to over 100 year 11 pupils at EGA, designed to equip the students with knowledge of our Parliamentary democracy and in particular to help them understand the importance of voting, and encourage them to register to vote.

The event was heralded a success, with 101 students already registering to vote.

Hogan Lovells' Public Law and Policy team is also working with Bite the Bullet and other organisations to develop and promote legislative amendments that facilitate voter registration, particularly among young people.

Commenting on the initiative, Yasmin Waljee OBE, International Pro Bono Manager at Hogan Lovells, said:

"Bite the Ballot is a crucial initiative and we are proud to support it. At present only 1 in 4 young people vote and the situation is likely to get worse with the introduction of individual voter registration, which is shortly due to replace household registration.

"With the approach of the General Election in 2015, Bite the Ballot aims to raise the participation of young people in political debate and this morning's successful event is just the start. We hope to work further with them on similar events both locally and even nationally".
