Conservation of the North Atlantic Right Whale

Environmental nonprofit Oceana asked us to support their campaign for conservation of the North Atlantic Right Whale. Whalers hunted this gentle, coastal-dwelling whale nearly to extinction in the last century, and only around 400 exist now. Many are injured or killed by vessel strikes or entanglement in fishing lines. They will be extinct within a few decades without strong action to eliminate or mitigate these threats.

Our team drafted a policy paper that describes the laws and regulations that aim to prevent vessel strikes and that suggests how to strengthen these laws. We will be building on our previous work by assisting Oceana in drafting comments on a long-awaited report issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service which evaluates the effectiveness of existing regulations to prevent vessel strikes and proposes recommendations to enhance existing protections.
