Steffen Steininger is at his best when IP issues get really challenging. A leading European patent litigator and trial lawyer with more than 20 years of experience, Steffen has litigated 300 + patent proceedings as lead counsel for his clients at the UPC, all major German national courts, the Federal Supreme Court, the German Patent Court, the EPO and the European Court of Justice. He represented his clients in some of the most commercially significant and technically challenging cases pending in Europe in recent years. Steffen has masterminded international strategies for litigations involving the U.S., the UK, France, the Netherlands and Italy. He constantly strives to provide the best results while using his client's resources efficiently.
For his work Steffen, can draw on a deep understanding of the telecoms, high-tech, automotive, renewable energy and life sciences industries. Steffen also guides clients through the pitfalls of trade secret litigation, the negotiation of licensing agreements and IP transactions. He has a wealth of knowledge on the new UPC. Since the court’s beginnings he is among the most active UPC representatives. He is also an author in Tilmann / Plassmann, Unified Patent Protection in Europe (Oxford University Press / C.H. Beck).
JUVE, the leading German directory, lists Steffen since more than 10 years as "highly recommended" for patent litigation. Legal 500 lists him since many years as a leading partner for patent litigation for Germany. In 2023 he was named a World Intellectual Property Review Leader. Wirtschaftswoche listed him in 2017 as one of only 20 German lawyers for the "first league of patents in Germany".
Steffen heads our Munich patent litigation group. He also supervises our Responsible Business activities for Continental Europe. He studied law in Regensburg (Germany) and Paris (France). He received a Master's degree from the University of Oxford (UK) in 1999 and a Ph.D. in international procedural law in Germany in 2002.

Representing LG Electronics in patent litigation proceedings in the telecommunication and appliance industries adverse to various NPEs and competitors.
Permanent advisor to Israelian renewable energy company SolarEdge in a series of patent infringement and validity proceedings.
Representing a leading US high-tech company in several patent litigation series relating to standard essential patents for WIFI and Video-codec before the UPC and various German District Courts,
Advising a major international automotive supplier in patent litigation (including preliminary injunction) proceedings against a competitor relating to brake systems.
Permanent advisor to a leading U.S. based pharmaceutical company regarding patent licensing and employee inventions.
Advising an international technology company re the acquisition/transfer of a patent portfolio including more than 2000 patent families.
Advising leading German mobile phone operator in patent litigation against non-practicing entity relating to UMTS standards; case went to German Federal Supreme Court.
