Earth Day at Hogan Lovells

The first Earth Day took place on 22 April 1970, and it is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Today, more than 1 billion people worldwide participate in Earth Day activities every year. Various activities took place throughout our offices globally to celebrate Earth Day on 22 April 2014.

Many of our offices used Earth Day as an opportunity to highlight our existing bike-to-work and recycling policies, offering guidance to our people as to how to get involved.

Other activities included a "battle of the offices" between our two office buildings in Munich to see which could save the most energy in May and June, a Recycled Art Contest in New York, and an environmental pledge in Singapore. Our Denver office invited volunteers to help the Colorado Bar Association plant trees as part of the nationwide effort by the American Bar Association, and our Los Angeles, Houston, and Colorado Springs offices gave all employees reusable water glasses in an attempt to reduce waste.

In our Washington, D.C. office, we held an Earth Day fair in collaboration with Hines Property Management that showcased our sustainability efforts through various displays, including some by our various "green" vendors that presented recycled office supplies, "green" cleaning products, our water and electrical savings efforts, and even gave away plants and seedlings! The fair featured our electric car, ZELDA (Zero Emissions Lawyer Driven Automobile), which we parked in our lobby along with electric car chargers for our people to explore. We also collected E-Waste as well as old cell phones to donate to battered women's shelters, and we hosted a charming exhibition of environmental artwork designed by the children that attend daycare in our facility.

Our Northern Virginia office also held a fair with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Metro to inform our people about the three new Silver Line Metro stops and the Fairfax Connector bus.
