From turning point to tipping point

On October 23, we welcomed over 100 attendees to our Washington office for an evening focused on promoting gender equality and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The event began with a welcome from our CEO, Steve Immelt, followed by a brief viewing of "Flip the Switch," our partnership documentary with Barefoot College. We then welcomed Roy Bunker, Founder of Barefoot College, Caren Grown, Senior Director, Gender, World Bank, and Alyse Nelson, President and CEO of Vital Voices, for a panel discussion.

Alyse moderated a thoughtful discussion with Bunker and Caren, who shared their insights and perspectives on why promoting gender equality can accelerate change and lead to economic prosperity and security.

After the panel concluded, our clients, panelists, and hosts gathered in our rooftop solarium to continue the conversation over cocktails and small bites.

As our partnership with Barefoot College comes to a close at the end of 2019, this event served as an opportunity to celebrate our partnership. Through the course of our partnership, we:

  • trained 474 solar mamas from 35 countries;
  • gave 1,600 hours of pro bono advice to open four new solar training centers;
  • raised $450,000 for Barefoot College;
  • provided 50 solar mamas with the opportunity to discuss their personal experiences with human rights; and
  • engaged 1,4000 school students about Barefoot College and the Sustainable Development goals.
