18 December 2020 – Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce that London international arbitration partner Dr Markus Burgstaller has been selected by the Government of Austria for appointment to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes’ Panel of Arbitrators. Previously, Markus has served for twelve years on the ICSID Panel of Conciliators.

ICSID is an international arbitration institution for the settlement of disputes arising between states and foreign investors. The Panel lists are used by parties, and by the Centre to fill vacancy when parties are unable to agree on a nominee and to appoint ad hoc committees to hear annulment applications.

The process of nomination to the Panels of Arbitrators and Conciliators is highly competitive. Governments can only appoint four individuals to each panel. The appointments are for renewable terms of six years.

Markus has extensive experience in investor-State cases. He has acted for both investors and States in many arbitrations, including before ICSID, as well as in annulment proceedings.
