Philadelphia, 23 April 2021 – Global law firm Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce that the Honorable Kevin J. Carey (Ret.) has been selected by the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) Board of Directors to be President-Elect.

Founded in 1982 to provide Congress and the public with unbiased analysis of bankruptcy issues, ABI is the largest multi-disciplinary, nonpartisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency. Its membership comprises nearly 10,000 attorneys, accountants, bankers, judges, professors, lenders, turnaround specialists and other bankruptcy professionals.

An ABI member since 1997 and previously ABI’s Vice President for Membership, Judge Carey has served as the judicial co-chair for ABI’s Mid-Atlantic Bankruptcy Workshop and is a frequent speaker at ABI events.

Currently a partner in the Philadelphia office of Hogan Lovells, where he represents both companies and creditors as they navigate challenging domestic and cross-border bankruptcy proceedings, Judge Carey joined the firm in 2019 following his time on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, where he earned a reputation as one of the nation’s top bankruptcy judges. During that time he authored more than 200 reported decisions, issued important rulings on key issues such as valuation, fiduciary duties, and other complex chapter 11 confirmation issues, and presided over high-profile cases including Exide Technologies, Tribune Co. and New Century Financial.

He also previously served as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2005. Commenting on his appointment to the ABI, Judge Carey said: “I am both humbled and gratified by the confidence shown by my selection by the ABI Board as president-elect, and for the Firm’s support of ABI and my participation in ABI leadership.”

Christopher Donoho, Global Head of Business Restructuring and Insolvency practice group at Hogan Lovells, said: “Judge Carey is a man who embodies integrity and leadership, in a very human and compelling way. He has a constant thirst for knowledge and a fundamental appreciation for his peers. I can think of no better person to lead the ABI as the world looks ahead to what happens next in the economy and in the court systems as a path to emerging from this Global pandemic begins to reveal, with a reshaped way of doing business that will change our society forever in so many ways.”
