Press releases | 19 December 2019

Global law firm Hogan Lovells has hired energy law specialist, Dr Stefan Schroeder, as a partner to its Dusseldorf office.

Stefan's practice focuses on compliance with European and German energy regulatory requirements including the representation of clients in "abusive practices" proceedings before the German Federal Network Agency, the regulatory body for the gas and electricity sector, as well as complaint proceedings against decisions of the German Federal Network Agency.

He also regularly advises clients on energy trading issues (e.g. with respect to the drafting and negotiation of trading contracts or contracts concerning gas storage services), on renewable energies law and has supported M&A transactions and international projects in the energy sector.

His hire enhances the firm's well-known energy practice in Germany for which there is increasing demand for new energy law and especially regulatory work in respect of the ongoing development of the energy market in the country.

Stefan will join the firm on 1 January 2020 from DLA Piper where he was counsel. He joins the firm together with associate Katharina Schwind.

Stefan's expertise in both energy regulatory and trading law combined with his market reputation perfectly fit the Global Regulatory goal of strengthening the visibility of Hogan Lovells in the German energy market.

Global Regulatory practice head, Alice Valder Curran, said: "Stefan's knowledge of energy regulatory issues in Germany including natural gas, pipelines and compliance/enforcement present a good fit in our regulatory practice, as well as the chance to foster and optimize the interface between our Regulatory, Corporate M&A and Corporate Commercial practices."

Stefan Schuppert, Germany Managing Partner, added: "Stefan seems like the missing piece of the puzzle in a time of significant regulatory challenges in the German energy sector. We are delighted to welcome him to the firm."

Dr Stefan Schroeder said: “Hogan Lovells’ global energy regulatory practice is second to none. I am looking forward to be part of this practice and to join Hogan Lovells’ vibrant and excellent team in Germany."
