Jose Penalva

Senior Paralegal
Alicante

Over 15 years have passed since I joined Hogan Lovells (at the time Lovells) as a paralegal in 2002. During this time I have seen many changes in our office and I am proud to have contributed to some of these developments.

I have been deeply involved in the administration of our IP management system, the setup of our docketing and search teams as well in know-how and quality management. Moreover, I am the liaison with the EUIPO in relation to e-business tools. In 2008, I was promoted to paralegal team leader, and my tasks have included the organization of paralegals meetings, providing training to new joiners, relationships with other Hogan Lovells offices as well as the interface with management, staff recruiting processes, staff appraisals and selection of a variety of professional service providers.

In my role as a senior paralegal, I assist in managing the IP portfolios of many multinational companies and preparing brand protection strategies, including filing applications, oppositions
and cancellations as well as processing global trade mark renewals, recordals and customs applications. I also carry out trade mark searches in the EU and draft trade mark availability search reports.

What three words describe the people who work at Hogan Lovells?

Oh, that's a difficult question to answer as there are my adjectives I'd use to describe them. But I'd say supportive, diverse and engaged.

What’s the most meaningful part of your work day?

When I come to the office every day I look at my "to-do" list and check which matters have priority and need immediate attention. I then plan my tasks accordingly. Of course, I always come to the office knowing that something unexpected might come that requires immediate attention. However, I always plan and organise my work day in advance to make sure I complete my tasks in timely manner.
