Policy & regulatory briefing Germany | Gamblification of eSports

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the attention of many sports fans has shifted to eSports. Through this, betting on tournaments and sponsorship deals with gambling firms as an integral part of major eSports events is given special public attention.

With public attention comes political pressure. The increasing influence and public interest in the whole sector plus the growing "gamblification" have prompted policymakers to take a closer look. In light of the planned new German gambling regulation and the uncertain place of eSports in various regulatory frameworks, we held a webinar on 30 June 2020.

This policy and regulatory update included a short assessment of the compliance challenges for the eSports sector by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Kubiciel; head of the Research Center for eSports Law. Furthermore, the webinar summarized the current legal situation and the possible upcoming regulatory changes in the eSports market, especially if and when gambling regulation will be applied in future.
