Edgar Mata actively advises clients on the best strategies to secure and protect their intellectual property rights. His practice covers any and all matters involving trademarks, trade names and slogans, industrial designs and models, plant breeders' rights, and protection of confidential information and trade secrets.

Edgar also works with copyrights and reserve of rights, including the protection and defense of IP rights in trials and anti-counterfeiting practices. He has collaborated with counsel abroad in handling international trademark portfolios and advertising projects.

He assists clients in a wide variety of industry sectors, from consumer goods, beauty and cosmetics, and technology to food and beverage, financial institutions, and sports and entertainment.

Edgar began his intellectual property practice in the in-house legal department at Universal Music Mexico, handling diverse agreements involving copyrights and complex licenses over such rights. He joined Hogan Lovells BSTL (then Barrera, Siqueiros y Torres Landa, S.C.) in 2011.

Representative experience

Advised one of the world's largest snacks companies in the acquisition of a Mexican leading confectionary company for approx. $1.3 billion USD.

Representation of a major U.S. multinational pharmaceutical company in trademark infringement and unfair competition actions, as well as invalidation actions against famous and well-known trademarks.

Advising an entertainment production company/agency on an advertising project in Mexico, Central and South America.

Managing the anti-counterfeiting program for a U.S. multinational company in connection with batteries.

Advising a global information technology company in its trademark and litigation portfolio.

Represented a leading supplier of ground support products, systems and solutions for the subway mining and tunneling industry in design patent infringement actions related to mining tools.
