Amol Chalisgaonkar advises trustees and employers of occupational pension schemes on all aspects of pensions law. He particularly enjoys help solving tricky pensions taxation and GMP equalisation issues for clients.

Amol is the Chair of the Association of Pensions Lawyers' Junior Sub-Committee until December 2023. He is also on the steering committees of REAHL (Hogan Lovells' race and ethnicity employee network) and O:pen (a pensions industry-wide network for LGBTQ+ people and allies).

Representative experience

Advising ITV on the buy-out of Section C of the ITV Pension Scheme with PIC, including designing a solution to ensure GMP equalisation by GMP conversion did not cause tax issues for deferred members.

Acting for the trustee of the Gates UK Pension Scheme on the s.67 "actuarial equivalence" conversion exercise of DC benefits with a GMP underpin, into a pure GMP with additional, separate DC benefits.

Advising one of the country's largest pension providers on tax issues arising out of a major benefit correction exercise, including engaging with HMRC and individual members.

Acting for Open Trustees on the £2bn PPF+ buy-out of the Old British Steel Pension Scheme with PIC.

Acting for the trustees of the Industry-Wide Coal schemes on protected persons issues, employers in restructuring situations, a buy-out of a section of one of the schemes, and GMP equalisation.

Representing multiple trustees and employers on bulk transfers of DC benefits to mastertrusts (eg the L&G WorkSave Mastertrust and the Aon Mastertrust).

Advising the trustee of a mastertrust on significant events, a key regulatory requirements framework, their chair’s statement and implementation statement, and their template deed of participation.

Reviewing DB and DC governance documents for several clients, eg Statements of Investment Principles, Chair's statements, implementation statements, and TCFD reports.

Giving pro bono advice to Chayn, a global charity which supports survivors of gender-based violence, on their incorporation, ongoing governance, and partnership with Bumble.

Drafting Consolidated Trust Deeds and Rules for three trustee clients.  One of these was drafted to apply to all members, including deferred members, fully replacing all prior trust Deeds and Rules.

Acting for a Fortune 500 company on the pensions aspects of its proposed entry into a joint venture, involving a sale of shares in its subsidiary

Representing the Trustees of the MGM Assurance Staff Pension Scheme on its buy-in with Standard Life.

Advising TotalEnergies on ceasing future accrual in the defined benefits sections of its pension scheme.
