Recognized at the UN Global Compact Awards 2023 for our work supporting Ukraine

We were recently recognized at the UN Global Compact Awards 2023 in relation to our pro bono work in Ukraine. The UN Global Compact Partnership for Sustainability Award is an annual international campaign celebrating the best projects implemented in partnership between business, government, and civil society and is aimed at achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, protecting the environment, solving social challenges, and promoting peace.

We won the Partnership for Sustainability Award for Defending the Rights of Prisoners of War, Ukraine. We were recognised for representing two British nationals who were enlisted in the Ukrainian armed forces and captured by Russian controlled forces where they were tortured and, following trial which did not meet international fair trial standards, sentenced to death. Within 48 hours, our team secured interim measures from the European Court of Human Rights, with the Court requiring the Russian Federation to ensure that the death penalty imposed on the applicants not be carried out; to ensure appropriate conditions for detention; and to provide them with any necessary medical assistance.

We were a finalist in the Partnership for Sustainability Award for “The Possible”, Ukraine – highlighting the pro bono legal support provided to Civic UK and Civic Ukraine through our HL BaSE program. Our work has enabled funds from the UK’s Save the Children Fund and Disaster’s Emergency Committee to be directed towards investment in women-led social entrepreneurs in Ukraine. We advised and drafted the agreements and policies required for Civic to make grants and loans to these entrepreneurs, many of whom are working in extremely difficult conditions.
