Press releases | 28 September 2023

New York, NY, 28 September 2023 – Global law firm Hogan Lovells hosted its Latin America Summit on 13 September in the firm’s New York office, welcoming nearly 200 partners and clients from across Latin America. The discussions deepened attendees’ understanding of the challenges and business opportunities in the region, noting Latin America’s potential for significant growth across various industries and sectors.

Attendees contributed meaningful dialogue on a range of topics, including:
  • Trade & energy;
  • M&A trends in the region;
  • U.S. extraterritorial reach of fraud & Foreign Corrupt Practices Act’s (FCPA) effect on Latin America;
  • Investor-state dispute resolution;
  • Recent trends in banking and finance activities in Latin America; and
  • Cybersecurity preparedness.
Oliver Wack, Partner at Control Risks, delivered the summit’s keynote address, with additional remarks throughout from knowledge partner McKinsey & Company.

Juan Francisco Torres-Landa, Partner and Head of Hogan Lovells’ Latin America Practice, noted: “Trade and energy are intertwined and require timely advice to overcome regulatory obstacles and unexpected complications in business projects.”

“Similarly, corruption has historically been a reputational concern given the number of DOJ enforcement cases related to Brazil and Mexico in particular,” said São Paulo Office Managing Partner Isabel Carvalho, who advises Latin American clients in corporate governance structuring and FCPA compliance. “Companies should be aware of their FCPA risk in an ever-evolving, investigation-heavy environment.”

Emil Arca, a New York-based Capital Markets partner, added: “In the face of increased interest rates as well as the prospect of higher capital requirements for regulated banks, we expect to see continued and increasing use of complex and collateralized structures that create value for both issuers and investors.”
