Tobias has extensive experience with patents in many technical areas. He has particular expertise in the fields of green chemistry, electrochemistry and chemical energy storage (battery technology, hydrogen, synthetic fuels), chemical engineering, materials science, polymer chemistry, and metallurgy, but also in digital communication, computer networks, and telecommunication standards.
Tobias holds degrees in chemistry, computer science, and law from RWTH Aachen University, ETH Zurich, and the University of Hagen, and has obtained his science doctorate in the field of inorganic chemistry/metallurgy as part of a collaborative research centre on high manganese steels. He trained as a German and European patent attorney at a renowned patent law firm in Cologne, and worked for several years in patent prosecution before joining our patent litigation team. As part of his two-year legal clerkship, he supported our patent law practices in Dusseldorf and London.

Defending a US based printer and laptop manufacturer in a series of patent litigation in Germany regarding WiFi patents including FRAND defense and invalidity proceedings before the EPO
Representing a global technology provider in UPC proceedings before the Brussels Local Chamber and the Court of Appeal as well as in EPO opposition proceedings concerning computer technology
Defending a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer in patent litigation in Germany concerning UMTS/LTE standard-essential patents including nullity actions against the patents
Assissting a US based technology company in patent litigation concerning online video streaming
Advising a German chemical company in asserting a public prior use against a competitor's global patent family
Extensive experience in patent prosecution in a wide range of technical fields, including materials science, polymer chemistry, textile chemistry, electrochemistry, industrial chemistry, among others*
