Unfair dismissal rights in the UK are set to expand significantly under the Employment Rights Act. As of 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for protection against unfair dismissal will reduce from two years to six months, and the statutory cap on unfair dismissal compensation will also be removed.

In this instalment of Employment Bite, London employment lawyers Ed Bowyer and Morven Ross discuss the January 2027 changes, what these developments mean in practice, and what employers may want to do now to prepare.

Authored by Ed Bowyer, Morven Ross, and Jo Broadbent.
