Miwa Okegawa is an associate in the Intellectual Property, Media, and Technology (IPMT) practice in the Tokyo office and a member of the trademark team. She is a Japan-qualified patent attorney (benrishi) and IP litigator.

Miwa’s practice primarily focuses on IP prosecution, and she has extensive experience advising clients on a variety of domestic and international trademark issues, including trademark clearance searches, enforcement of trademark rights, trademark portfolio management, opposition and cancellation proceedings, and filing and prosecution of trademark applications.

Miwa brings significant experience, having worked at both a law firm and a trademark firm in Tokyo for more than 16 years.

She obtained her B.A. in English Literature from Tsuda University and is fluent in both Japanese and English.

Representative experience

Advising a well-known Japanese electronics manufacturer and its affiliated companies in relation to their global trademark portfolio management and trademark protection strategies in each jurisdiction.

Assisted a well-known Japanese electronics manufacturer in connection with a non-use cancellation trial in Malaysia.

Advising a well-known Japanese food company on its trademark portfolio throughout Asia, including trademark prosecution and enforcement strategies in China.

Advising multiple foreign and Japanese companies, including one of the biggest foreign beverage companies, a foreign metal tube manufacturer, various Japanese food companies, a major Japanese bank, and a well-known Japanese pharmaceutical company, on trademark strategy and assisting with trademark use, prosecutions and registrations in Japan.

Assisting a well-known pharmaceutical company on enforcement of its trademarks, including sending warning letters of possible trademark infringement.
