Dr. Ademola Bamgbose is a senior associate in the international arbitration, construction and engineering group at Hogan Lovells International LLP in London. He is also a key member of the global Africa practice, and is admitted to practice in Nigeria, England and Wales.

Ademola is a Solicitor Advocate and has full rights of audience for civil matters at all levels of the English courts. He represents clients in high value commercial arbitrations and advises on issues spanning multiple sectors and jurisdictions including emerging markets. He has extensive experience advising clients on Africa-related disputes and risk management in emerging markets.  He has previously undertaken a commercial disputes secondment at a top FTSE 100 company in London.

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, he spent some time at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris. He also worked in the Lagos office of a leading commercial law firm in Nigeria where he represented corporate and government entities in complex and high value disputes at superior courts of record in Nigeria. 

In November 2020, Ademola was part of a team of consultants engaged by the Government of Sierra Leone to draft the recently enacted arbitration law for the country.  He regularly contributes to ongoing discussions on development in Africa, with some of his contributions featuring on leading platforms across the globe. 

Dr Bamgbose is Chair of the Advisory Board of the Lagos Court of Arbitration – Young Arbitrators Network and a Regional Representative (Africa) of the London Court of International Arbitration-Young International Arbitration Group.  He is also a founding director of the Africa Arbitration Academy and the Africa Construction Law respectively. He is an honorary lecturer at Nigeria’s premier university, University of Ibadan where he teaches international arbitration.

Representative experience

Acting for an African state entity in an LCIA arbitration arising from a multi-billion dollar telecommunication infrastructure project including claims of fraud.

Representing a consortium of Israeli and Turkish companies in an ICC arbitration against a South Asian based contractor in relation to a power contract in East Africa.

Acting for a Global Fortune 500 company in appeals before the English Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in relation to the enforcement of a guarantee.

Representing a global leader in the hospitality sector, in an LCIA arbitration relating to claims for damages resulting from the wrongful termination of two hotel management agreements.

Advising an East African investor in relation to claims arising from a share purchase agreement with a United State Government Fund. 

Advising a Central Asian state entity in English enforcement proceedings arising in relation to an ICC arbitration, including claims of state immunity.

Advising a leading West African contractor in a contractual dispute arising under the LCIA rules relating to the breach of an exclusivity agreement with a leading international engineering company.

Representing a leading manufacturing company in West Africa in a dispute against a UK based fintech company in relation to claims arising from a foreign exchange transaction.

Representing a leading entertainment company in Africa in English court proceedings against a global entertainment company in relation to disputes arising from a facility agreement.  

Acting for a South East Asian Government in an LCIA arbitration regarding claims for payment arising from a multi-million dollar satellite project.

Acting for a leading West African investor against a listed South African multinational in an LCIA arbitration including issues relating to local content laws and regulations.  

Acting for a Southern African company in an LCIA dispute against a multinational energy company in relation to the breach of an agency agreement.

Advising a leading Angolan company in a contractual dispute arising under the ICC rules against a multinational logistics company including issues relating to local content law.
