Maria Yaka is an associate in the Intellectual Property (IP) practice in the firm’s Tokyo office. She is a Japanese qualified lawyer (bengoshi) with particularly strong experience advising clients on cross-border matters. 

Maria obtained her LL.B from Gakushuin University and her J.D. from Keio University Law School. Maria is fluent in both Japanese and English, having spent time in England before returning to Japan. Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, she worked at a highly respected domestic law firm in Japan.

Representative experience

Advising clients on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters under Japanese law, including with respect to IP-related matters, contractual law and terms of use, labor-related matters, and other matters related to M&A transactions.*

Advising and representing foreign and Japanese companies with respect to a product liability litigation matter, a building surrender litigation matter, a labor-related litigation matter, and other litigation-related matters in Japan.*

Advising global and Japanese companies with respect to data privacy issues.*

Advising global and Japanese companies with respect to a wide range of regulations in Japan, including those related to antitrust law, consumer law, and pharmaceuticals and medical devices.*

Advising the overseas subsidiary of a Japanese company with respect to a fraud-related investigation.*

nAdvising the Japanese subsidiary of a global company with respect to employment-related matters.*
