Matt specialises in sanctions and export controls, advising on compliance with UK and EU regimes, sanctions risk assessment, and the impact of trade restrictions on insurance policies and claims. He regularly advises insurers, reinsurers and corporates on complex and fast‑moving regulatory issues.
He also has significant experience in warranty and indemnity insurance, advising on policy coverage and negotiating wordings on high‑value transactions, often involving complex risk profiles. He works closely with corporate colleagues to support transactions, including advising on insurance solutions, coverage positions and the identification and notification of issues at the pre‑claim stage.
Matt has acted on complex, high‑value litigation, including proceedings that have reached the Supreme Court. He has extensive experience advising on procedural, tactical and substantive issues, working closely with senior lawyers and counsel.
He is acting as the lead associate on a substantial High Court claim, defending a global corporate in proceedings brought in contract and negligence, with responsibility for the day‑to‑day conduct of the proceedings and procedural strategy.
Matt has completed a secondment with a broker client and a placement within the sanctions team of an underwriter, giving him first‑hand insight into the regulatory, claims and transactional considerations facing insurance and reinsurance market participants.

Acting for a financial institution in relation to disputes (up to and including in the Supreme Court) and related regulatory issues arising from the mis-sale of certain financial instruments.
Advising a global corporate on its position and recoveries under its cyber insurance following a ransomware attack.
