HHS Issues HITECH Act Enforcement Interim Final Rule

The regulations are being promulgated under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which was enacted earlier this year.  HITECH enhanced and expanded the enforcement and penalty provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Rule and this rule implements those changes.  The interim final regulations will be officially published in the Federal Register October 30th and will be effective on November 30, 2009.  Public comments will be accepted by HHS until December 29, 2009.
