Remembering Stuart Stein, former Partner and Chief Legal Officer

Press releases | 13 August 2024

13 August 2024 – We are extremely saddened by the passing of Stuart Stein, former Partner and Chief Legal Officer at Hogan Lovells.

Stuart spent almost the entirety of his career in Hogan Lovells’ Washington, D.C. office. He joined the firm almost three decades ago as an Associate, became a Partner in 1994, and quickly established himself as a top corporate lawyer for financial institutions in D.C. He was the head of the Corporate Practice Group (now Corporate & Finance) and played a key role as a member of the core group that analyzed and executed the combination and integration of Hogan Lovells, creating the firm as we know it today.

He was ahead of his time when it came to data analysis and its value to corporate finance and was a valued advisor to many. His breadth of experience, calming personality, and understanding of the complexities of a global law firm, made him the clear choice to become Chief Legal Officer in 2017. His measured approach in difficult, high-stakes situations and his dedication to always getting it right, made him incredibly effective. He will continue to be remembered as an outstanding lawyer and a respected, impartial, and thoughtful decision maker.

Stuart’s profound impact on the firm will be memorialized in a new Stuart Stein Lounge in our Washington, D.C. office, which will be unveiled next month.

CEO Miguel Zaldivar said: “Stuart was deeply loved both as our friend and as a colleague. He embodied the values and principles that continue to define our firm and was known for being open minded, having a deep sense of fairness, and a calm demeaner. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Joy, and the entire Stein family.”
