Matt Hopkins
Senior Associate Intellectual Property
Matt is a patent litigator with experience in all phases of litigation, from case inception through trial. While he primarily represents defendants, he has also represented plaintiffs. His matters have involved cutting‑edge technologies, including LRDIMM and RDIMM memory modules; Wi‑Fi and mobile communications (3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G); geofencing software; oil and natural gas fracturing technologies; video compression algorithms; and spinal cord stimulators.
Matt has extensive experience in administrative proceedings before the USPTO, including inter partes review and post‑grant review proceedings. His work includes drafting petitions and patent owner responses, conducting expert depositions, and arguing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
Before entering private practice, Matt spent nearly a decade at the USPTO as a patent examiner reviewing applications related to computer networking, mobile communications, and video compression technologies such as H.264. He also served on work details with the PTAB and the USPTO Office of the Solicitor, where he assisted with adjudicating appeals and reviews and researched case law, legislative history, and factual issues in federal patent matters.
Matt also has experience in regulatory matters before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. As counsel to the Nuclear Utility Group on Equipment Qualification, he led efforts supporting a member contesting an NRC non-cited violation, participated in notice‑and‑comment rulemaking, and coordinated with agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency on regulations affecting the nuclear industry.
