Julius Gertz advises clients on international, European and German foreign direct investment (FDI), foreign trade, competition and procurement law.

As cross-border M&A transactions become increasingly intricate and fraught with regulatory challenges, Julius assists clients in identifying and overcoming these complexities. He focuses his practice in addressing governmental constraints arising from security and geopolitical considerations, such as FDI screenings, as well as navigating the intricacies of competition law. Leveraging his extensive knowledge and insights in the domains of security and geopolitics, gained amongst others through his training at the German Ministry of Economics and his international experience living abroad, Julius also extends his advisory services to clients seeking counsel on various cross-border and security policy issues, with a distinct emphasis on export control and procurement law within the security and defence sector.

Before joining Hogan Lovells, Julius gained valuable experience as a junior lawyer at a renowned boutique law firm specializing in FDI, international trade and procurement law. He completed traineeships at the Department of Foreign Economic Policy at the German Ministry of Economics in in the subdivision responsible for FDI and at another prominent international law firm, where he gained experience in competition law.

Julius is German-qualified, having completed his legal studies at the University of Göttingen with a focus on private and public economic law, as well as international private law. Complementing his academic pursuits, Julius co-founded a refugee law clinic in collaboration with fellow students.

Advising Equitix on German foreign direct investment notification and procedure concerning the acquisition of a sustainability portfolio from Enpal.

Advising a U.S. Seller on German FDI filing and in-depth screening procedures concerning the divesture of its German subsidiary active in the semiconductor sector to a Chinese acquirer. 

Advising IBM in several transactions on multi-jurisdictional foreign direct investment and merger control notification obligations.
