Maria Lucia Echandia focuses her practice on International Commercial Arbitration and Investment Arbitration in various industries such as construction, energy and natural resources, among others.  

Maria Lucia has experience in arbitration proceedings before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICRD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), as well as arbitrations under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) rules and the Rules of the Arbitration and Conciliation Center of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce (CCB).

Maria Lucia’s experience includes regularly drafting substantial submissions in proceedings, preparing cross-examination of witnesses and experts, and participating in final international arbitration hearings.

Maria Lucia obtained her law degree from Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia and has a Master's degree (LL.M.) from Columbia Law School. 

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Maria Lucia worked for one of Colombia's leading law firms, where she focused her practice in litigation and domestic and international arbitration. 

Representative experience

Representing an investor against the Dominican Republic related to the expropriation of a concession for the operation of a sanitary landfill.

Representing an Ecuadorian company in an international commercial arbitration under the ICDR Rules related to a breach of contract claim for the sale of desalination plants. 

Representing Respondent in an arbitration under the ICC rules seated in Mexico City related to a breach of contract pertaining to the generation and sale of electric energy.

Advisor to a state-owned company in an arbitration under ICC rules related to disputes arising from an EPC contract.

Representing Respondent in an arbitration under the CCB Rules relating to disputes arising out of an Asset Purchase Agreement.

Representing a Mexican entity in a civil liability case filed by a Colombian State entity for failure to comply with a Concession Agreement.

Representing a multinational company in various proceedings related anti-trust disputes in the agronomy industry.
