Mariana Amaral uses her training in civil and common law jurisdictions and her unique background to assist clients with a variety of international business transactions.

Mariana advises private investors, multilateral and financial institutions, and project sponsors in complex cross-border development and financing transactions that focus on infrastructure and renewable and traditional energy projects.

Mariana began her career at Hogan Lovells in the Rio de Janeiro office, where she assisted clients in various international business transactions across different asset classes, including mortgage originations, loan workouts, joint ventures, acquisitions, and sale/leasebacks. She has also been involved in major ICC arbitrations and one of the most high-profile corruption investigations in the history of Brazil. Fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish and fully qualified as a lawyer in both Brazil and Washington, D.C., she is able to assist clients of different backgrounds around the world in achieving their business goals.

Prior to obtaining her first law degree, Mariana worked as a journalist for the largest TV channel in Brazil. Her communications and journalism background translate effectively into her practice. She exercises great skill in writing and revising contracts to clearly and efficiently reflect business deals and achieve her clients' objectives. Mariana also maintains an active pro bono practice, representing victims of domestic violence in asylum

Representative experience

Advised Brazil's major oil and gas producer in transactions with drillship construction and FPSO units, including a US$1bn sale and leaseback and a US$1bn secured loan.
Advised an international company in an FCPA and anti-corruption investigation in Brazil and the United States.
Advised a Brazilian owner in three international construction arbitrations totaling almost US$1bn in claims.
