Matthew Bullen focuses on pensions and trusts litigation. He has considerable experience in handling large and complex disputes, both domestic and multi-jurisdictional, as well as conducting investigations on matters that raise regulatory issues or which may result in litigation. His cases frequently involve insolvency or public law elements.
In recent years he has worked particularly intensively on moral hazard regulatory actions, both for targets of regulatory action and trustees.
His cases have been among the most significant in recent developments in pensions law, including Silentnight, Nortel, Box Clever, Halcrow, Pilots, and IMG.
He also has substantial experience of bringing and defending professional negligence claims in the pensions context.

Halcrow: an innovative benefit restructuring.
IMG: a leading decision on powers of amendment, s91 Pensions Act 1995, and the application of SWT v Wightman.
Nortel: acting for the trustee and PPF in recovery of a £2.6bn pensions deficit in the UK, France, the U.S., and Canada.
Pilots: representing the Trustee in an extremely wide-ranging application for directions and related appeals.
Representing ITV plc in the Box Clever FSD proceedings.
Silentnight: representing the targets in a circa £100m regulatory action.
Alex Ferry Foundation: assisting in the establishment of a new charity seeking to improve lives in shipbuilding, engineering and manufacturing areas throughout the UK.
