The EU has recently published a new draft implementing regulation setting out the type-approval rules in Europe for autonomous vehicles. The framework being established is an important first step that will have an impact on the direction of the industry and for the future of this new technology in Europe. It will shape the outcome of testing and development for years to come.

During our webinar “The Road to Autonomous Vehicles: A new flexible European regulatory framework" Global Leader of Mobility and Transportation Patrick Ayad discussed the latest draft regulation on autonomous driving and why a flexible approach is key to the future of mobility alongside following panelists:

  • Richard Damm, President at KBA and Chairman of the UNECE Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles, Germany;
  • Maria Cristina Galassi, Project Leader Safety of Connected and Automated Vehicles at the Sustainable Transport Unit of the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC);
  • Jessica Uguccioni, Lead Lawyer Automated Vehicles Review at the Law Commission of England and Wales.

Together they talked about how we ensure that innovation, competition and partnership are driving the best approach, what the EU draft implementing regulation means for the future of fully autonomous vehicles in Europe, and if the EU draft creates a competitive and innovative European marketplace.
