Preparing For New Paid Family Leave Laws


Within the last month three new laws have significantly increased the availability of paid family leave for employees on both coasts. California increased the benefits already available to employees in that state under its paid leave insurance program, and New York adopted a similar program that, when fully implemented, will be the most generous in the country. Employers do not pay for these benefits, which are funded through mandatory employee payroll deductions. The city of San Francisco, however, has taken paid parental leave one step further by becoming the first jurisdiction in the nation to require private employers to fund paid parental leave for their workers.
