Setšhephi, commonly known as "SJ" was born and bred in Polokwane and matriculated at Phiri-Kolobe High School in 1987. After completing his BA & LLB degrees at Wits in 1994, he worked for Aegis Insurance, then the Road Accident Fund, where-after he completed his articles at Ronald Bobroff & Partners (RBP) in 1999.

He was admitted as an attorney in September 1999, stayed on at RBP until 2003 as a professional assistant, worked for Sihlali Molefe Inc between 2003 and 2006 as a salary director. He joined Routledge Modise Inc as a partner in April 2006.

Throughout his career, he acted for major insurance companies, including the Attorneys Indemnity Insurance Fund, while also specialising in general & commercial litigation, administrative, medical aids, banking and sports law.

SJ is an ardent sportsman and soccer fan and doubles up as the firm's soccer coach.

He is a member of the Black Lawyers Association and the Black Management Forum. He served on the Audit Committee of Statistics South Africa for over six years. SJ also serves on the boards of a number of private companies, and as an Alternate Employer Representative of the firm's Pension Fund.
