Internet of Things Will Provide the Next Wave of Patent Litigation

The story of patent litigation in the technology sector over the past 15 years or so has been marked by two main narratives. One narrative developed from the waves of new technology that led to flurries of patent filings and competitor-versus competitor battles for dominance and market share in the new technology. We can all cite famous examples of some of the high-profile litigation spawned by some of these disputes. The other narrative came from the follow-on monetization efforts by patent owners — who often acquired their patents on the secondary market. Pejoratively, we call this the patent troll problem.
