EU to consider new rules on cryptocurrencies

The EU has indicated that it might develop new rules around cryptocurrencies, after hosting a roundtable on the topic yesterday.

In remarks made after the roundtable, Valdis Dombrovskis, Commission Vice-President in charge of Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, said that, as a first port of call, the EU will assess when cryptocurrencies and related services are covered by existing regulation.

The conclusion will depend "on the facts and circumstances around specific crypto-tokens", Dombrovskis said.
