District of Columbia Restricts Employer Inquiries Into Applicant Criminal History With New "Ban the Box" Law

On August 21, 2014, the Council of the District of Columbia joined several states and numerous local jurisdictions in enacting "ban the box" legislation, restricting employers' ability to inquire into a job applicant's criminal history. The District's legislation — titled "The Fair Criminal Record Screening Amendment Act of 2014" — is scheduled to become effective on October 21, 2014.
