CFTC to discuss virtual currencies

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) has announced that it will host two meetings this month on digital currency issues and released a background document on its oversight and approach to virtual currency futures markets.

On 31 January, the Market Risk Advisory Committee (MRAC) will host a meeting open to the public to discuss the statutory and regulatory process for the listing of new and novel products on CFTC-regulated designated contract markets (DCMs) and swap execution facilities (SEFs) through self-certification.

CFTC staff will provide an overview of the current self-certification process and CFTC authorities and responsibilities related to the oversight, surveillance and monitoring of listed derivatives products within CFTC jurisdiction.
