'An outstanding lawyer'

Legal 500, 2015

"Eagle-eyed, supremely smart and incredibly resourceful" (Legal 500), Nicholas has been the global Chair of Hogan Lovells since 1 May 2012. He maintains his client practice and in addition to heading up the real estate disputes (property litigation) team in London, is recognised for surplus property transactions, outsourcing and project management.

Nicholas is respected by peers for “knowing the tricks of the market, while clients find his sense of humour adds flavour to his pragmatic and commercial approach” (Chambers). The London team which he leads (which is ranked in the top band by Legal 500 UK 2017) concentrates on all aspects of commercial property litigation, covering all sectors. He has a stand out practice as one of the very few UK lawyers who have vast experience, and a deep understanding, of the rent review market.

Nicholas has been involved in some of the UK's most notable structured sale and leaseback transactions. His work and thought leadership has helped to create the innovative LLT market in the UK. Nicholas also takes a project leadership role on significant real estate transactions and corporate outsourcings. Nicholas frequently sits as an arbitrator and also as a legal assessor/advisor to surveyor, arbitrators and independent experts. He is an accredited and active mediator of high value disputes.

He is an Honorary Member of RICS, one of a small number of lawyers worldwide and is a Trustee of ISLP-UK as well as CareTech and member of the Council of Heart of the City. He is a member of the Members & Communications Committee of REAL Estate BALANCE and of the Women in Law London (WILL) Advisory Group. He is a diversity champion and Chair of PRIME, a company established to improve access to the legal profession for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Nicholas is also a member of the Profit-with-Purpose Working Group for the UK National Advisory Board.
