On 24 June 2015, the Select Committee of the Administrative Council of the EPO endorsed the "True Top 4" proposal on renewal fees applicable to the Unitary Patent (UP) in Europe. The proposal was adopted with the required ¾ majority at the meeting held by the EPO and the EU Member States participating in the unitary patent.

The, now accepted, Top 4 proposal will mean that the renewal payments for a single UP after grant will be equal to the total sum of the renewal fees payable in the four most frequently designated EU Member States, the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. In exchange, UP proprietors will gain patent protection across the participating EU Member States.

The Select Committees' decision is a significant step forward for the Unitary Patent in that it gives users the likely cost implications.
