Johannesburg, 2 August, 2017 - Hogan Lovells has announced that Sibongile Solombela joined yesterday as a partner in the Johannesburg Corporate Practice Group. He joins from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr where he has served as Director. Prior to this he was in-house as a Senior Manager at Lonmin PLC.

Sibongile is experienced in negotiating large-scale M&A transactions, with a focus on corporate finance including rights issues and capital raisings, takeovers, black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions, and JSE listings requirements.  He advised on the first ever successful hostile takeover in South Africa - Kansai Paint Limited on its unsolicited R2.4 billion bid for JSE-listed Freeworld Coatings Limited -  and whilst at Lonmin was instrumental to the implementation of the second phase of its BEE transactions in 2014. High profile clients Sibongile has worked with include Shell and the De Beers group.

Sibongile marks the third corporate partner hire in Johannesburg this year, following that of Vivien Chaplin and Rachel Kelly in May, and represents continued investment in the firms' wider corporate M&A practice, which has now welcomed eight lateral partner hires to date in 2017.

Commenting on the hire, David Gibbons, Global Head of Hogan Lovells Corporate Practice Group, said:

"Sibongile's hire complements that of Vivien Chaplin and Rachel Kelly earlier this year, particularly with their combined black economic empowerment experience. He has a very respectable client base and will be a valuable member of our market leading corporate team in Johannesburg and bring greater depth to our offerings for transactional clients."

Sibongile Solombela commented:

"Hogan Lovells' international reach is something very few in the South African market can rival and I am looking forward to working with the corporate team, who have an outstanding reputation locally, to share my experience on a global platform. This is a unique opportunity to work with a truly global and forward-thinking law firm."
