London Asset Finance Team Wins Africa Deal of the Year 2013

10/06/2014

Our London asset finance team has been awarded the Airfinance Journal Africa Deal of the Year 2013 award for advising Standard Chartered, through its leasing arm, Pembroke Capital, on the sale and leaseback of 10 Airbus A320-200 aircraft to South African Airways.

Not only was this the first aviation finance deal that Standard Chartered has completed in South Africa, but it was the single biggest operating leasing transaction in the region in 2013. In addition, the deal is crucial for South African Airways' long-term expansion ambitions.

We were instructed on the transaction in April 2013, and the first two aircraft were delivered in July 2013. The remaining aircraft are to be delivered at regular intervals over a two year period.

The asset finance team has a long-standing relationship with Standard Chartered/Pembroke, and has acted for them across our global office network on a number of aircraft financing transactions with airlines including China Southern, Cebu Pacific, Tiger Airways Singapore, PT Mandala Airlines and Arik Air.

The lead partner is Robin Hallam, asset finance, London. Other members of the team included:

•Amael Beauvallet, associate, Paris;
•Pete Buckley, associate, asset finance, London;
•Ben Godsell, trainee solicitor;
•Richard Goss, senior associate, asset finance, London;
•Richard Jadot, partner, Paris;
