01 October 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C., 1 October 2012 – Hogan Lovells announced today that Diogenes Bermudez, former General Counsel for Petrobras Venezuela, joined its Caracas office as counsel in the Infrastructure and Project Finance practice.

“Diogenes is one of the best oil and gas lawyers in Venezuela, and he brings a wealth of experience that will be of great value to our clients,” said Bruno Ciuffetelli, Co-Head of Hogan Lovells’ Latin America practice. “Diogenes will help us further strengthen and expand our Energy practice in Latin America, where he has great contacts and an exceptional reputation. We are very excited to welcome him to the team.”

In his previous position with Petrobras Venezuela, Bermudez counseled on oil and gas law and led complex negotiations with national oil companies, government officials and international partners, related to major energy projects.  He has extensive experience negotiating oil and gas contracts and granting instruments, such as mixed companies, joint venture agreements, operating services agreements, and gas licenses.  He has also been actively involved in different international bidding processes for oil and gas projects.  In addition, during the last five years he served as member of the Board of Directors for several Mixed Companies in Venezuela on behalf of Petrobras.
Earlier in his career, Bermudez served as Legal Counsel for LAGOVEN, S.A., an affiliate of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), where his work focused on drafting and negotiating drilling and seismic contracts, among other industry contracts, including joint venture agreements and operating services agreements with numerous international oil companies.

“Hogan Lovells has established one of the leading energy practices in Latin America, and I look forward to joining the team,” said Bermudez. “Hogan Lovells is uniquely positioned to handle cross-border investment and infrastructure projects in Latin America. Their global platform provides unparalleled opportunities, and I am excited to help grow a market-leading practice.”

Bermudez currently serves as President of the Legal Directors Committee of the Venezuelan American Chamber of Commerce. He received his LL.M. Masters of Law from Georgetown University Law Center and his Ph.D. in Law from the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
