Hogan Lovells Pledges its Support to the Social Enterprise Sector
20 September 2011
LONDON, 20 SEPTEMBER 2011 - Today sees the announcement of the winners of the Big Venture Challenge, a competition supported by Hogan Lovells to find 25 ambitious and dynamic social entrepreneurs and provide them with the money and support they need to help grow their ventures.
The Big Venture Challenge is a national competition run by UnLtd to find the most ambitious social entrepreneurs in England. The 25 winners of the challenge receive an initial £25,000 grant plus the opportunity to pitch for up to £150,000 of further matched funding. In addition, the winners obtain access to first class business support, networks and mentoring designed to keep pace with the fastest growing social ventures.
A total of 638 applications were received by the organisation, of which 41 took part in Dragon's Den-style pitches before a wide-ranging selection of business leaders and professionals to be selected as one of the final 25.
Hogan Lovells hosted the eight days of the judging process and will be on-hand to provide pro bono legal support to some of the winning ventures going forward.
The successful ventures reflect the diversity of the problems they are seeking to tackle and the variety of fields they are working in, from reducing re-offending to climate change, from mental health to disability, and from children’s services to homelessness.
Hogan Lovells corporate partner Ben Higson, one of the judges, said:
"The Big Venture Challenge is an offer not just of a significant sum of expansion capital but also ongoing support and, as such, represents a real injection of adrenaline to the social enterprise sector. As a firm with a leading pro bono practice and strong social enterprise experience, we are delighted to be part of the movement to grow the sector."
