Hogan Lovells Hosts International Arbitration Conference in Mongolia

27 March 2014

27th March 2014 - Hogan Lovells' Ulaanbaatar and Paris offices worked together to help organize and support the International Conference on Commercial Arbitration in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The conference was co-hosted by the Ministry of Justice of Mongolia, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the American Chamber of Commerce of Mongolia and the Mongolia International and National Arbitration Centre (MINAC). Its purpose was to provide an opportunity for various participants – international and Mongolian lawyers, judges and representatives of the private and public sector – to share their experiences on best international arbitration practices and discuss the legal framework of arbitration in Mongolia, in the presence of the Minister of Justice of Mongolia.

At the conference, Paris based International Arbitration Partner Laurent Gouiffès gave a presentation on "Best Practices in International Arbitration", during which he outlined common practices in the field of international arbitration and commented on the Arbitration Law of Mongolia. Working in close collaboration our Ulaanbaatar and Paris offices (Partner Michael Aldrich and Associate Nominchimeg Odsuren in Ulaanbaatar, Associate Gauthier Vannieuwenhuyse in Paris), drafted the circular for the conference, which was handed out to all participants.

Our lawyers also participated in a working-group discussion on how to reform the Arbitration Law of Mongolia. Some of the key issues discussed related to the relationship between local courts and arbitral tribunals, the development of domestic arbitral institutions and the enforcement of foreign awards in Mongolia.

Other participants included Andrea Carlevaris, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce Court of Arbitration (ICC), Joe Liu, from the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and Tan Ai Leen, from the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

The day-long conference, which was attended by more than 200 delegates, was very well received and given prominent media coverage by local television stations, including a broadcast on Bloomberg TV Mongolia.
