Hogan Lovells Helps London's Newest Air Ambulance Take Flight

05 October 2015

1 October 2015 – With Hogan Lovells' pro bono legal support, London's Air Ambulance has bought a second emergency medical helicopter, allowing their advanced trauma team to reach an extra 400 critically injured people across London each year.

Over the past two years, Hogan Lovells has provided pro bono legal support to LAA on the complex cross-border purchase of their second MD-902 Explorer helicopter from a Qatari company, and represented LAA on the negotiation of the comprehensive financing package – provided by Santander – that supported the acquisition. The firm continues to be involved in a number of related matters connected to the helicopter's acquisition and its entry into frontline service, expected in early 2016.

The team at Hogan Lovells was led by Robin Hallam and Richard Goss, working closely with Charles Newitt, the COO of LAA, and Louise-Mari Schoeman, LAA's Finance Manager.

LAA can respond to emergency traumas in the London area up to eight times faster than a response car or ambulance. To continue doing this every day, every daylight hour possible, the charity needed a second helicopter to cover periods when their only one helicopter is offline for maintenance. In 2014, the helicopter was unavailable for the equivalent of 55 days, leaving London without a single emergency medical helicopter.

By acquiring a second helicopter, and by extending its daylight flying hours in the summer months, LAA estimates it could reach a further 400 patients each year. In 2015 they have flown longer hours in the summer months for the first time in its history and, as a result, were able to reach a further 67 patients by air.

Since its launch in early 2015, LAA's ‘Your London, Your Helicopter’ campaign has raised over £4 million towards the purchase and running costs of a second helicopter. A further £2 million is still needed to reach the £6 million target, to fund running costs of a second aircraft and extending summer daylight flying hours for a the next five years. Donations can be made online at yourhelicopter.london, or by texting HELICOPTER to 70800 to donate £5. Find out more online here.

Thanking the people and organisations across London who have supported and contributed to the successful purchase of their second helicopter, LAA's CEO, Graham Hodgkin, said:

We are absolutely thrilled to have now completed the acquisition of our second MD902 Explorer helicopter. While more money still needs to be raised and there is still more work to do to get the aircraft ready for UK HEMS operations, this is a truly exciting development for London and the biggest step-change in our service resilience in the charity’s history. Thank you to all those who have already contributed.”

LAA is Hogan Lovells' Touch charity partner for the London office.  Touch is the charitable giving element of the firm's Citizenship programme. Every couple of years Hogan Lovells teams up with a Global charity, nominated by every office worldwide, and each office can also select one charity to support at a local level. The firm will then match fund the efforts of staff, increasing the amount it gives to the charity.
