Hogan Lovells Celebrates First-Ever English Trainee to Qualify in Russia

04 November 2013

MOSCOW AND LONDON, 04 NOVEMBER 2013 – Hogan Lovells has announced that the first-ever English trainee solicitor to have been trained exclusively in Russia qualified into its Moscow office on 1 November.

Two years ago, Hogan Lovells was the first firm to obtain authorisation from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to take trainees exclusively in Russia. The first trainee to spend the entirety of her training contract in Russia, Alexandra Dolinskaya, began work in March 2012 and qualifed at the firm on Friday.

The Moscow office has been responsible for all trainee recruitment direct to that office since gaining SRA authorisation two years ago and uses the same selection criteria as London, which requires a sharp intellect, strong drive and resilience and a high standard of professionalism. Since March 2012, the Moscow office has taken on two trainees who will be able to qualify into corporate, capital markets or litigation.

Moscow-based partner Richard Cowie said: "Moscow is an important market for the firm and providing the right team for clients doing business in Russia has always been a priority.  Next year is our 20th anniversary in Russia and our trainee solicitor programme has contributed to our success.  We are pleased to see Alexandra qualify and are looking forward to her continued development within the firm."

Ben Higson, graduate recruitment partner in London, said: "We are seeing the benefits of our unique global reach and having a programme for English trainee solicitors to train exclusively in Russia reinforces our commitment to providing clients with lawyers who are not only highly trained in that jurisdiction but are genuinely commercially aware and understand the business needs of clients operating there."

Alexandra Dolinskaya said: "Training in the Moscow office has been a fantastic experience. Not only have I worked on a variety of cutting edge legal work, I have also gained an invaluable understanding of how things are done here and I feel much better placed as a lawyer to give my clients advice based on deep market knowledge and a genuine sense of commercial awareness."
