Hogan Lovells advises SVEVIND on the development and implementation of one of the world's largest green hydrogen projects

Press releases | 01 September 2021

Led by Frankfurt partner Tobias Faber, international law firm Hogan Lovells is advising German-Swedish project developer SVEVIND Energy GmbH (SVEVIND) on the development, project planning, financing and implementation of one of the world's largest green hydrogen projects, which will be built with approximately 45 gigawatts of wind and solar farms in the vast steppes of Kazakhstan.

SVEVIND plans to install wind and solar farms with a total capacity of 45 gigawatts in areas of Western and Central Kazakhstan. The yielded wind and solar energy is expected to feed 30 gigawatts of electrolysers to produce approximately three million tons of green hydrogen or green ammonia (based on hydrogen) per year. SVEVIND has already signed Memoranda of Understanding with Kazakh Invest National Company JSC, an investment vehicle that reports to the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and with the Mangystau region in Western Kazakhstan; both serving for the development and implementation of this large-scale project.

The entire development, engineering, procurement and financing phases are estimated to last approximately three to five years, the construction and commissioning phases another five years.

"We are very pleased to once again support Svevind in a trendsetting large-scale project and to be able to contribute our expertise in international project developments in such a targeted manner. Green hydrogen-based large-scale projects will be able to contribute significantly to the fulfillment of the Green Deal in Europe and also underline Hogan Lovells' strong commitment to ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance)" said Dr. Tobias Faber, Partner of the Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects practice group in Frankfurt.

Hogan Lovells is advising SVEVIND on all issues related to the development, project planning, financing as well as the implementation of the large-scale project. In 2019, Hogan Lovells has already advised Svevind successfully on the planning, implementation and sale of the largest European onshore wind farm, Markbygden 1101, in northern Sweden.
