Hogan Lovells and American Red Cross Launch Law Firm Challenge Blood Drive in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C, 17 January 2012 – Hogan Lovells announced today the launch of the first-annual American Red Cross Law Firm Challenge in which firms in Washington, D.C. will host blood drives to help meet the critical needs of local hospital patients in need of a blood transfusion.

To date, nearly a dozen law firms in Washington, D.C. have agreed to help by participating in the challenge, which will run through 31 January 2012. Planned to be an annual event, the challenge will help collect blood donations during the month of January, which is historically one of the most difficult times for the American Red Cross to recruit donors each year.

Initiated by the Associates Committee in Hogan Lovells’ Washington, D.C. office, the Red Cross Law Firm Challenge will recognize the winning firm, based on participant level, with a trophy from the American Red Cross.

In the weeks leading up to and immediately following the winter holiday season, the American Red Cross, Greater Chesapeake and Potomac (GC&P) Region has seen a significant decline in donor turnout at local blood drives and donor centers. This reduction in collections has put several blood types at critical or emergency level, making it difficult for the region to prepare for potential emergency situations.

"Volunteer donations are the only source to supply lifesaving blood to local patients in need at more than 50 area hospitals. The Red Cross is very grateful for the support of Hogan Lovells and all sponsor groups that rise to the challenge of hosting blood drives this January to help replenish the critically low blood supply,” said Gary Ouellette, CEO of the American Red Cross GC&P Region. “We encourage all area law firms to participate and all eligible donors to schedule a blood donation as soon as possible."

Law firms in the district can arrange to register for the challenge by contacting American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Account Representative, Erica Kagan at kagane@usa.redcross.org.
