Global law firm Hogan Lovells advised on a pro bono basis  Friends of The Underline, Inc. in its successful effort to obtain a coveted grant award of more than US$22 million on behalf of the Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works.

In a highly competitive bidding process, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded the grant, known as the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development Transportation Discretionary Grant (BUILD), to complete The Underline, Miami-Dade County’s first multi-modal (pedestrian/bike/automobile/ train/etc.) corridor.

The Underline will improve connectivity and safety in one of the most populated counties in the United States, along U.S.-1, one of the region’s most heavily trafficked and dangerous roads. When complete, The Underline will enhance first and last mile connections to public transit, improving access to eight Metrorail stations. The 10-mile corridor will also create 120 acres of gathering spaces.

Hogan Lovells senior associate Daniel Balmori represented Friends of The Underline in the grant application process.
