Carolina S. Machado

Carolina Machado has established a solid background in international arbitration in addition to representing clients on internal investigations and compliance matters.

Carolina represents international clients on large and complex arbitral proceedings mainly in the energy and construction sectors. She has worked in ICC, LCIA, DIS, ICSID, and UNCITRAL matters for European, American, and South American clients. She has also represented Latin American clients on compliance and FCPA investigations in Brazil.

Carolina has an international background, having previously worked as a foreign associate at two major British firms in London and in Paris. Carolina has also counseled for the International Division of the American Arbitration Association (ICDR) and interned for the Honorable Richard M. Berman in the Southern District Court of New York.

Carolina majored in International Relations at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais and received her Brazilian law degree from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. She holds LL.M.s from Stockholm University and Fordham University School of Law. Carolina is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.

Representative experience

Represents the largest Brazilian energy company in three complex ICC construction arbitration matters under New York law.

Successfully defended one of the largest energy companies in Europe on a DIS construction/energy arbitration involving projects in Brazil.

Worked on two ICSID arbitrations involving the Kingdom of Spain under the Energy Charter Treaty.

Advised a Caribbean government in regards to the applicable international laws (treaties and free-trade agreements) to an impending ICSID arbitration.

Advised a large Brazilian company on the rules and procedures of the most prominent Brazilian arbitration institutions.

Worked on an ICC dispute arising out of a breach of distributorship agreement under New York law between a Colombian and an American company.
