Policy & regulatory briefing Germany | Open sports betting market, new requirements and business opportunities?

After years of a rapidly growing sports betting market, the German federal states have decided last year to overcome the existing legal uncertainty by creating a regulated open market with effect from 2020.

But crucial regulatory details, such as the allowed betting line-up or the rules for the retail business, still need to be clarified. Simultaneously, new requirements were discussed in context of the almost completed negotiations for a post-2021 State Treaty on Gambling.

In light of the new regulated sports betting market and the remaining uncertainties around the long-term regulatory regime, Hogan Lovells and The Bernstein Group hosted a webinar on 3 March 2020. This 45-minute policy and regulatory update presented an analysis of both the status quo and the upcoming regulatory changes in the sports betting market.
